Home/Find a Journey/Pre & Post Safari Extensions
Two to five nights either side of the safari. Enough to shake off the flight at the start, or to stop moving at the end.
COL-06 · Jan, Feb, Mar…
Almost nobody regrets adding two nights at the end. A great many people regret flying home the morning after their last game drive.
Game viewing
How reliably you see a lot, without luck.
Weather
Dry, clear and predictable, versus not.
Few vehicles
How much of a sighting you get to yourself.
Value

The case for it
Long-haul flights arrive tired and safari starts early. One night in Arusha before the first game drive is the cheapest improvement you can make to a northern-circuit trip.
A short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha puts you on the Indian Ocean the same afternoon. That proximity is the entire argument for a beach extension.
Two nights in Stone Town, three on the east coast, or four diving off Pemba are each a complete thing rather than a fragment of one.
Nights either side of the safari carry no park fees, which is what makes them so much less expensive per night than the safari itself.
What actually fits
An extension either side of a safari should be a complete thing, not a fragment. These are the ones that work, with the honest minimum for each.
The cheapest improvement you can make to a northern-circuit trip. Long-haul flights arrive tired and safari starts before dawn; one night in Arusha turns the first game drive from an endurance test into a morning. Coffee-farm lodges on the slopes outside town are the pleasant version.
Enough for the carved doors, the spice farms, Forodhani at dusk and a slow morning. Two nights is right; one is a transit stop and three starts to repeat itself.
One night to arrive and stop moving, two to actually rest. This is the standard beach extension and the one most people wish they had made four.
Pemba justifies the extra flight if you dive. The wall diving is the best in the archipelago and the island is a fraction as visited as Zanzibar. Leave a clear day before a long-haul flight — there is a no-fly interval after diving.
Mount Meru, the Momella Lakes and their flamingos, or a walk in the forest on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes. A day trip, not a climb — a real Kilimanjaro summit is seven to nine days and its own trip entirely.
A Lake Eyasi morning with the Hadzabe, or a Datoga blacksmith visit, arranged on their terms with fees disclosed upfront. Best placed at the start, near Manyara or Eyasi, rather than bolted onto the end.

FOR TWO
Small camps, a private vehicle, and a beach at the end of it. We write to every property in advance — camps are generous to honeymooners when somebody asks.

SIXTEEN NIGHTS
North, south and coast in one journey. The only itinerary we run that reaches both circuits without rushing either of them.

7 DAYS ON THE MOUNTAIN
The most walked route to Uhuru Peak, and rightly — it climbs high and sleeps low, which is what gets people to the summit.

BEST ACCLIMATISATION
Longer, quieter and with the highest success rate of the popular routes. An extra day on the mountain buys more than any amount of training.

Before you commit
Breaking a safari in half to sit on a beach and then returning to the bush costs two extra transfers and a lot of the day. Run the safari through, then stop.
Diving has a no-fly interval afterwards. If you are diving off Pemba or Zanzibar, leave a clear day before a long-haul flight.
The internal flights that make these extensions work carry a strict soft-bag allowance — typically around 15 kg including hand luggage, with no hard-shell suitcases. Confirm the exact allowance your carriers apply, and whether you offer luggage storage in Arusha Excess is not a fee you pay at the airstrip; it is a bag that does not travel.
Zanzibar is reached by a short flight or by ferry from Dar es Salaam, and the two put you in different places at different times of day with different luggage rules. It is a booking decision that shapes the whole first afternoon, not a preference you express on arrival.

Telling you a season is wrong for you costs us one booking and saves you a disappointing trip. Both columns are worth reading.

Common questions
Three on the coast is the common answer — one to arrive and stop, two to actually rest. Two feels short; five starts to feel like a separate holiday.
Not as an add-on. A climb is seven to nine days and its own trip. What works as an extension is a day walk on the lower slopes or a coffee-farm morning in the foothills.
For arrival, yes. As a destination it is a working town rather than a sight, but Arusha National Park, Mount Meru and the Momella Lakes are all close and quiet.
If you are arriving on a long-haul flight, yes. Kilimanjaro International is roughly an hour from Arusha, most long-haul arrivals land in the evening, and the first game drive starts before dawn. One night turns that from an ordeal into a start.
After, always. Safari days begin before dawn and involve a lot of driving; doing that after a week of lying still is a genuine shock. Doing the beach afterwards is a reward, and every itinerary we sell runs in that order.
If you dive, yes. If you want Stone Town, spice farms and a choice of hotels, no — Zanzibar has all of that and Pemba does not. Pemba is quieter, greener and far less visited, which is the whole point of it.
Leave a clear day. Standard guidance is at least 18 to 24 hours between the last dive and a flight, and long-haul from Zanzibar or Dar means we build a full non-diving day in before you travel.
Tell us when you land and when you fly home, and we will show you what fits either side without rushing the safari itself.
