What a Luxury Safari is

The northern circuit with the road days removed and the camps reduced to a dozen tents. You fly between regions instead of driving them, and you sleep inside the parks rather than outside the gates.

What you are buying is position and scale. A small camp inside the boundary means you are in the wildlife area at first light rather than an hour away from it, and there are eleven other guests rather than a hundred.

The guiding steps up too: a private guide who stays with you throughout, and vehicles that never carry more than four.

Good to know

Your questions, answered

What actually makes a safari 'luxury' in Tanzania?+
Three things, in order of how much they change the trip: camp size, camp position and vehicle ratio. A luxury camp holds eight to twelve tents rather than sixty rooms, sits inside the park or on a private concession rather than outside the gate, and puts four guests in a vehicle rather than six. Thread count is the least of it.
Is it worth the extra over the Classic Safari?+
Honestly, not always. You see the same animals on the same route. What you buy is position — being inside the boundary at first light — plus private guiding and the flights that remove long road transfers. On a second safari or a honeymoon that is worth a great deal. On a first safari with a finite budget, the Classic tier is the better purchase.
Are the internal flights included?+
Yes on the Signature tier and above, where flights replace the long Ngorongoro–Serengeti and Serengeti–Arusha road legs. Light aircraft limit you to 15kg in a soft bag, and every camp does daily laundry, so pack for three days rather than ten.
What is a private concession?+
Land bordering a national park, leased by a camp. Because it sits outside TANAPA jurisdiction, walking safaris, night drives and off-road driving are permitted there — none of which are allowed inside the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater. It is the main reason to choose a concession camp.
Can we take a private guide throughout?+
Yes, and it is included from the Signature tier. The same licensed guide travels with you from arrival to departure rather than being handed over at each park gate. It is the single biggest quality difference between tiers.
How far ahead should we book?+
Nine to twelve months for June to October. Small camps have eight to twelve tents, so they sell out long before the large lodges do — particularly the northern Serengeti camps during crossing season.
Is the crater-rim lodge worth it?+
If you are descending, yes. A rim property means you are at the Seneto gate at 06:30 with the first vehicles rather than arriving mid-morning behind the day visitors. The crater allows only six hours on the floor, so the first two matter disproportionately.
Can this tier work for a family?+
Better as a sole-use private house than as separate camp rooms. Several luxury camps set a minimum age of twelve; a private house has no age limit, gives you your own guide and vehicle, and usually works out cheaper per head once you are six or more.

The same plains. Far fewer people.
