Fifty kilometres north of Zanzibar, Pemba is everything its famous sister was thirty years ago. Hilly, densely green and blanketed in clove plantations, it receives a tiny fraction of Zanzibar's visitors. The reefs that fall away from its western shore are among the finest wall dives in the Indian Ocean, and the beaches are, for the most part, entirely empty.
Locals still call it Al Khadra — the Green Island — and it remains the heart of the Swahili spice trade.
PEMBA ISLAND
Bush & Beach: the Quiet Coast

The most reliable weather of the year — dry, breezy and comfortable, with excellent underwater visibility. The best window for diving and for exploring inland.
Hot, still days and warm, glassy water. Peak visibility on the walls and the best season for snorkelling and dhow sailing, though it is humid ashore.
Heavy rain, rough crossings and reduced visibility underwater. Many smaller lodges close entirely during these months.
Beneath the Surface
The Pemba Channel drops to more than 800 metres just offshore, creating dramatic coral walls that draw reef sharks, barracuda, turtles, napoleon wrasse and vast schools of jack. Ashore, the island's forests shelter the endemic Pemba flying fox and Pemba scops owl, while the clove, vanilla and cinnamon plantations remain the island's economic backbone.

Pemba's western reefs fall vertically into the channel, producing drift dives along coral walls crowded with soft corals, reef sharks, turtles and pelagic schools. Suitable for certified divers; courses available on the island.

Pemba supplies the majority of Zanzibar's famous cloves. Walk the plantations with a local guide to see clove, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper growing, and taste each one straight from the tree.

Sail a traditional dhow out to Misali Island or one of the tidal sandbanks that appear at low water — a few hours of snorkelling, grilled fish and nothing else on the horizon.

The things our guests ask most before they travel. Still unsure? Speak to a safari specialist — we reply within 24 hours.
Light aircraft fly daily from Zanzibar (30 minutes), Dar es Salaam (1 hour) and Arusha. A passenger ferry also runs from Zanzibar but takes several hours and the crossing can be rough. Most guests fly, and we arrange the connection as part of your itinerary.
Different, not better. Zanzibar has Stone Town, more restaurants, more hotels and easier access. Pemba has far fewer visitors, better diving, greener landscapes and a much more traditional feel. If you want seclusion and reef diving, choose Pemba; if you want variety and nightlife, choose Zanzibar. Many guests do a few nights on each.
June to October is the most reliable season — dry, breezy and excellent underwater. December to February is hotter and very good for diving visibility. Avoid March to May, when the long rains bring heavy weather and many lodges close.
The famous wall dives suit experienced divers because of depth and current, but there are sheltered reefs on the eastern side that are ideal for beginners. Both the Manta Resort and Kervan Saray run PADI courses from Open Water upwards, so you can certify on the island.
From around USD 180 per person per night at simple beach lodges to USD 1,600 per person per night at Fundu Lagoon. Diving is charged separately, typically USD 60-80 per dive including equipment. Flights from Zanzibar are usually USD 150-200 each way.
Pemba is conservative and almost entirely Muslim — considerably more so than Zanzibar. Away from your lodge, cover shoulders and knees, and avoid public displays of affection. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight is inappropriate. Beachwear is fine on lodge beaches only.
Yes, Pemba is a malaria area, though a long-running control programme has reduced incidence substantially. Anti-malarial prophylaxis is recommended and all lodges provide mosquito nets. Take the usual evening precautions of repellent and covered limbs.
The Manta Resort operates a floating structure moored offshore whose bedroom sits four metres below the surface, surrounded by glass and lit to attract reef fish at night. It sleeps two, is booked as a single unit and must be reserved many months in advance.
Yes — this is the classic bush-and-beach pairing. Pemba connects by light aircraft to Arusha for the northern circuit and to Dar es Salaam for the southern parks. A typical itinerary runs 6-8 days on safari followed by 4-5 nights on Pemba.
