Gombe is the smallest national park in Tanzania — a narrow strip of forested valleys running down to Lake Tanganyika, barely 35 square kilometres in total. Its significance has nothing to do with size. In 1960 a young Jane Goodall arrived here and began what became the longest continuous study of any wild animal population, overturning the accepted definition of what separates humans from the rest of the animal world.
Her observation that chimpanzees make and use tools forced science to redefine man.

The best trekking conditions — firm trails, less humidity and chimps ranging at lower altitude. Clear water on the lake for swimming and snorkelling.
Green, atmospheric and productive for photography, with fruiting trees concentrating chimp activity. Trails are slippery but treks are often shorter.
Heavy rain and demanding, muddy trekking. The forest is at its most beautiful and visitors are almost nonexistent, but conditions are hard work.
Where the Study Began
The Kasekela chimpanzee community has been observed continuously since 1960 and is entirely habituated — the descendants of the individuals Goodall named and followed. Gombe also holds red colobus, olive baboons studied almost as long as the chimps, red-tailed monkeys and a rich forest birdlife, all packed into a handful of steep valleys above the lake.

Guides and researchers locate the Kasekela community each morning and lead guests up the valley trails to them. Because the park is small, treks are usually shorter than at Mahale — often under two hours.

Walk up to the viewpoint where Goodall spent years observing the community, and visit the site of the original banana feeding station. A short but genuinely moving pilgrimage.

The beach below the research station is safe, bilharzia-free and superb for snorkelling among endemic cichlids — the traditional way to spend the afternoon after a morning trek.

GOOD TO KNOW
The things our guests ask most before they travel. Still unsure? Speak to a safari specialist — we reply within 24 hours.
Fly to Kigoma from Dar es Salaam or Arusha, then take a boat north along the lakeshore — roughly one hour by private motorboat or three by the public lake taxi. There is no road access to the park at all. Most guests overnight in Kigoma before or after.
Gombe is smaller, cheaper, easier to reach and historically extraordinary, but its accommodation is basic and treks can feel busier. Mahale is far more remote, dramatically more beautiful and has genuinely luxurious camps, at roughly three times the price. Choose Gombe for the history and the budget; Mahale for the wilderness and the setting.
Sightings are very reliable — around 95% — because the Kasekela community is thoroughly habituated and the park is small enough that trackers rarely lose them. Viewing is limited to one hour once the chimps are located, as at all chimpanzee sites.
Gombe is the most affordable chimpanzee trekking in Tanzania. Park accommodation runs from around USD 120 per person per night, and the private forest lodge around USD 620. Park entry and chimpanzee permits are approximately USD 100 per person per day. Flights to Kigoma are typically USD 300-450 each way.
May to October gives the best trekking conditions and the clearest lake. November to December is green and good for photography. February to April brings heavy rain and hard walking, though the forest is at its most beautiful and you will likely have it entirely to yourself.
The park sets a minimum age of 15 for chimpanzee trekking — higher than Mahale's 12. This is set by Tanzania National Parks and is not negotiable, so Gombe does not suit families with younger children.
Reasonably fit. The valleys are steep and the trails rough and often muddy, though treks are usually shorter than at Mahale because of the park's small size. Expect one to three hours of walking on uneven ground, sometimes at pace when the trackers are moving to intercept the group.
The Gombe Stream Research Centre remains an active scientific facility and is not generally open to visitors, but you can see the buildings, walk to Jane's Peak and visit the original feeding station site. Guides who have worked with the project for decades are usually happy to talk about its history.
Two nights is the practical minimum, allowing two trekking mornings and time on the lake. Because the park is small, three nights is usually enough for anyone but the most dedicated primate enthusiast.
