Luxury Tents

Under Canvas

A luxury tent is not a tent in the way you are picturing. It is a canvas room on a timber deck, with a bed you will sleep properly in and a wall you can hear straight through. Here is what is actually inside one.

01 — THE BEDROOM

Canvas, Timber and a Proper Bed

Roughly 40m²On a raised timber platform

A double or twin bed with a real mattress and duvet, storage trunks at its foot, bedside tables and lamps, a writing desk and chair, luggage racks and rugs thrown over the canvas floor. Mosquito netting is built into the bed rather than hung as an afterthought.

  • Double, twin or family layout
  • Storage trunks & luggage racks
  • Writing desk and chair
  • Built-in mosquito netting

02 — THE BATHROOM

En-Suite, Behind the Canvas

Hot water on requestScreened off at the rear

Screened off at the back of the tent: an eco-flush loo, a washbasin on a vanity unit, hanging storage and a shower cubicle. At the classic tier that shower is a canvas bucket hoisted and filled with hot water when you ask for it. At the top tier it is plumbed and pressurised.

  • Eco-flush loo
  • Washbasin & vanity unit
  • Bucket or plumbed hot shower
  • Outdoor shower at some camps

03 — THE VERANDA

The Shaded Deck Outside

Best at 16:00Facing the plain, or the river

The outer fly sheet extends beyond the tent to throw shade over a private deck with campaign chairs and a small table. This is where most of the good hours happen — the gap between lunch and the afternoon drive, with a book you will not finish and something walking past.

  • Extended fly for deep shade
  • Campaign chairs & side table
  • Private, facing the wildlife
  • Plunge pool at some suites

04 — THE MESS

The Fire and the Long Table

From 19:00The centre of camp

Camp gathers in one place after dark: a fire, a handful of chairs around it, and a long table under canvas. Solar lamps and lanterns rather than mains light. You will be walked back to your tent afterwards by an askari with a torch, because the camp is not fenced.

  • Campfire before dinner
  • Communal or private tables
  • Solar & lantern light only
  • Escorted back to your tent
Plan this

You hear everything through canvas. That is not a defect of the accommodation — it is the entire point.

Luggage

Soft bags, 15kg on bush flights

Light aircraft between camps limit you to 15kg in a soft-sided bag, hard cases refused. Every camp does laundry daily, so pack for three days rather than ten. We confirm the exact limit for your aircraft.

Temperature

Colder at night than you expect

Canvas holds no heat. Nights on the Serengeti drop to 10–14°C and the Ngorongoro rim colder still. Camps supply hot water bottles and extra blankets on request — but bring a fleece.

Sound

You will hear hyena, and probably lion

There is nothing between you and the bush but canvas. Most guests find the first night unsettling and the last night the thing they miss most. Earplugs are provided at some camps if you would rather not.

Is a luxury tent actually comfortable?

Yes — considerably more so than the word 'tent' suggests. You get a proper bed with a mattress and duvet, furniture, rugs, an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda, all on a raised timber deck. What you do not get is soundproofing, air conditioning or a lock. Most guests are converted by the second night.

What is a bucket shower?

A canvas bucket on a pulley outside the rear of your tent, filled with hot water by camp staff when you ask. It holds around twenty litres, which is roughly five minutes of water if you are sensible. Classic and mobile camps use them; luxury camps and lodges are plumbed and pressurised.

Can you lock a safari tent?

Not in the way you can lock a door — tents zip closed from inside and out. Most provide a small safe for passports and valuables, and theft from camps is very rare given how remote and how staffed they are. Zip the tent fully closed when you leave it, mostly to keep baboons and vervet monkeys out.

Will animals come into camp?

Through camp, yes — routinely. Elephant, buffalo, hyena and occasionally lion move between tents at night, which is precisely why camps are sited where they are and why you are escorted after dark. Into your tent, no, provided it is zipped shut. Never leave food inside.

How cold does it get at night?

Colder than most people plan for. Canvas retains no heat, and the Serengeti drops to around 10–14°C overnight while the Ngorongoro rim can reach 5°C. Camps provide hot water bottles and extra blankets, but pack a fleece and something warm for the pre-dawn drive.

Is there a minimum age for tented camps?

It varies by camp rather than by rule. Many tented camps set a minimum of six, and several luxury camps set twelve. Family tents with a second sleeping area exist at a good number of properties, and booking a private vehicle usually unlocks camps that would otherwise decline younger children.

What is the difference between a mobile camp and a permanent tented camp?

A permanent camp occupies the same site every season on fixed timber decks. A mobile camp is designed to be struck and moved, relocating two or three times a year to stay with the migration — lighter, simpler, and closer to the herds at any given moment, at the cost of some comfort.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

No. Every tented camp we use provides full bedding, towels, mosquito nets and daily laundry. Sleeping bags only come into it on a Kilimanjaro climb or a fly-camping night, and we tell you clearly in advance if either applies.
