Lake Manyara is small, and that is exactly its charm. Squeezed between the sheer red wall of the Rift Valley escarpment and the alkaline lake itself, the park packs an extraordinary range of habitats into barely 330 square kilometres — groundwater forest, open floodplain, acacia woodland and hot springs, each within minutes of the last.
Ernest Hemingway called the setting the loveliest he had seen in Africa, and the view from the escarpment road still makes the case.

Wildlife concentrates near the lakeshore and the groundwater forest. The best months for spotting elephant herds and for the chance of lions resting in the acacia branches.
Migratory birds arrive in force and the flamingo flocks are at their largest, turning the shallows pink. Over 400 species have been recorded in the park.
The long rains bring lush forest, dramatic skies and very few vehicles. Some tracks become difficult, but photographers are rewarded with saturated colour.
Iconic Manyara Wildlife
Lake Manyara is one of only a handful of places on earth where lions habitually rest in trees, draped along the branches of acacias and sausage trees through the heat of the day. Beyond them the park holds large elephant herds, some of the biggest baboon troops in Africa, and a shoreline that turns pink with tens of thousands of lesser flamingos.

Manyara is one of the few northern parks licensed for after-dark drives, at roughly USD 59 per person above park fees. Genets, civets, bushbabies and hunting leopard are all regularly picked out in the spotlight.

When water levels allow, canoe safaris glide out among the hippos and waterbirds — a slow, silent perspective on the lake and the escarpment rising behind it.

GOOD TO KNOW
The things our guests ask most before they travel. Still unsure? Speak to a safari specialist — we reply within 24 hours.
No — they are wild lions and sightings are never guaranteed. Manyara is one of very few places where lions climb habitually, but they may be resting out of sight or hunting elsewhere in the park. Your best odds are in the dry season, mid-morning and late afternoon, in the acacia woodland south of the picnic site. Most guests visit for the park as a whole and treat the lions as a bonus.
Most itineraries give Manyara a half day, visiting en route between Arusha and Ngorongoro. If you want the canopy walkway, a night drive or serious birding, stay one night and give it a full day — the park rewards a slower visit far more than a rushed transit.
Flamingo numbers peak between November and March, when the shallows can hold tens of thousands of birds. Numbers depend entirely on water level and algae — in very dry years the flock disperses to other Rift Valley lakes. Bring binoculars; the birds are often far out on the flats.
Manyara is usually a component of a longer northern circuit itinerary rather than a standalone trip. As part of a joining safari expect from around USD 250 per person per day; private luxury lodging runs USD 900-1,450 per person per day. Park entry fees are included in all our itineraries.
Manyara is about 120km west of Arusha — a comfortable two-hour drive on tarmac, which makes it the natural first stop on the northern circuit. There is also an airstrip at Kuro for fly-in guests. All transfers are arranged as part of your itinerary.
Very much so. The short drives, the canopy walkway and the sheer density of easily-seen animals — baboons, elephants, hippos, giraffe — suit children far better than long days in a vehicle. Most lodges accept children from age 6, and family rooms are widely available.
Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, impala, hippo and enormous baboon troops are seen on almost every drive. Lion and leopard are present but less reliable. The birding is exceptional — over 400 recorded species including flamingo, pelican, stork and a great many raptors.
Not inside the national park itself, where walking is prohibited. Guided walking is available on the neighbouring private concessions — Chem Chem and the Manyara Ranch corridor — which is one of the main reasons to stay on a concession rather than in the park.
Manyara sits directly on the road to Ngorongoro and Tarangire, so nearly every northern circuit itinerary includes it. A classic 6-8 day route runs Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, often finishing with a few nights in Zanzibar.
