Sustainability

What we measure

Sustainability claims are worth nothing without a number and a date. Here is what we count and what we are aiming at.

Measured, not asserted

A number, or it does not count

Almost every safari operator has a sustainability page and almost none of them contain a figure. We would rather publish a handful of things we actually count, including the ones we are not yet good at.

Some context that is true regardless of operator: Tanzania has set aside roughly a third of its land area for conservation, and park fees are the primary funding for it. Every entry fee you pay is conservation spending, which is why we itemise it rather than hiding it in a headline price.

Tanzania also banned single-use plastic bags in 2019 — they may not be brought into the country, and that includes in your luggage.

00%

Tanzanian staff

Guides, office and workshop. An operator that flies in expatriate guides is exporting the best-paid part of the job. Supply the actual figure.

00%

Camps on a plastics policy

Camps we book that have eliminated single-use plastic bottles, providing filtered refills instead. Audit your camp list and supply.

00

Community-owned camps used

Camps and campsites on community land, where fees go to the village rather than a national chain. Count and supply.

0.0%

Turnover to conservation

Direct donations, above and beyond the park fees paid on your behalf. Supply the percentage and the recipients.

00

Guides on permanent contracts

Rather than seasonal day-hire, which is the industry norm and the reason guiding quality is so uneven. Supply the count.

00kg

Porter load ceiling

The Tanzanian regulatory limit on Kilimanjaro is 20 kg per porter, excluding their own kit. We do not exceed it. Verifiable at the weigh-in gate.

Where a figure above is still a placeholder, it is because we would rather leave it blank than estimate it. Fill these in and this becomes the strongest page on the site; leave them and delete the tiles you cannot evidence.

Hold us to the numbers.

If a figure here matters to your booking decision, ask us how it was counted. Anything we cannot explain, we should not be publishing.
