What a Private Safari is

Every other safari on this site starts from a route. This one starts from a conversation. You tell us how you like to travel, and we build the days around it rather than fitting you into an existing shape.

In practice that means your own guide, your own vehicle, and often sole use of the camp — meals when you want them, drives that start when you are ready, and nobody else's schedule in the room.

It suits multi-generational groups, photographers who want to sit at one sighting for three hours, and anyone who has done the northern circuit and wants something built rather than bought.

How we build it, in four steps

The briefhow you travel The routedrafted to it Your guidematched, not assigned Sole usewhere available On safarino timetable Revisionsuntil it is right

We start with how you travel

Step one

Not where you want to go — how you want the days to feel. Early or slow, moving or settled, photography or comfort, and who is travelling. Most of the useful information comes out of this rather than a destination list.

We start with how you travel

Four tiers, all of them yours

Where you’ll stay

At this tier the question is not which camp, but whether you take all of it.

24%  CONSERVATION FEES

Private itineraries carry the same fixed government fees as any other — roughly a quarter of the total — but a larger share goes to guiding and vehicles, because neither is shared with anybody.

Who it’s for

Exclusivity is worth paying for in some situations and simply expensive in others.

  • Multi-generational groups
  • Photographers
  • Returning to Tanzania
  • Families with young children
  • Special occasions
  • Couples
  • First safari, two people
  • Tight budget

Choose the Private if

  • You are six or more travelling together
  • You want a guide chosen for your interests, not assigned
  • You have done the northern circuit and want something built
  • Photography or birding drives how you want the days to run
  • You want sole use of a camp for a milestone occasion

Choose something else if

  • You are two people on a first safari — the Classic already gives you a private vehicle
  • Your budget is under USD 700 per person per day
  • You want fixed dates and a fixed price with no decisions to make
  • You are happy with the standard northern circuit as it is
  • You want to book quickly — this takes two or three drafts

All seven, side by side

Good to know

Your questions, answered

What makes this different from the Classic Safari?+
The Classic already gives you a private vehicle on a set route. A Private Safari starts from nothing: the route is drafted to your brief, the guide is chosen for your interests rather than assigned, and where possible you take sole use of the camp. If you are two people happy with the northern circuit, the Classic is the better purchase.
How much does a private safari cost?+
From around USD 780 per person per day at the classic accommodation tier, rising to USD 3,200 at a staffed private house. Cost per head falls as the party grows, because the guide, vehicle and often the whole camp are shared across more people. From about six guests, sole use is frequently cheaper than individual luxury rooms.
Can we go anywhere?+
Effectively yes. The northern circuit, the southern parks of Ruaha and Nyerere, the western chimpanzee parks of Mahale and Gombe, Kilimanjaro, and any of the islands. We will tell you where the seasons work against you and where the flight connections make a route impractical.
How does the planning process work?+
A conversation first, about how you like to travel rather than where you want to go. We draft a route against your dates, quote it honestly, and revise. Two or three rounds is normal. We would rather argue for a different month than let you book into a poor window.
Can we choose our guide?+
You can tell us what matters — big cats, birds, photography, geology, culture, or being good with children — and we match accordingly. For repeat guests we will request the same guide, subject to availability. The guide stays with you from arrival to departure either way.
What does sole use of a camp mean?+
You take every tent, so there are no other guests. Meals happen when you want them, drives leave when you are ready, and children can be as loud as they like. Several small camps of six to ten tents can be taken this way, and it usually makes sense from around eight guests.
Is it good for large family groups?+
It is the best answer we have for them. A whole house with its own chef, guide and vehicles handles mixed ages far better than trying to co-ordinate separate rooms and shared vehicles. Multi-generational groups are the most common private booking we take.
How far ahead do we need to book?+
Longer than a packaged trip, because there is drafting to do and sole-use camps are limited. Nine to twelve months for June to October, and earlier still for the festive period, which books before anything else.

Tell us how you travel. We will build the rest.

Not where you want to go — how you want the days to feel. Everything else follows from that conversation.
