Conservation Efforts

Where the money goes

Every safari is a conservation payment whether or not the operator says so. Here is who receives it, park by park.

Follow the fee

Your entry fee is the funding

Tanzania funds its protected areas primarily through tourism. TANAPA — Tanzania National Parks Authority — runs the national parks on entry fee income, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority does the same for the crater and its surrounding conservation area, which is unusual in also being home to resident Maasai communities.

So the largest conservation contribution most guests make is not a donation. It is the third of your safari price that goes to fees, and it happens automatically. What varies between operators is whether they tell you.

The table below shows the parks we work in, what the fees there fund, and the share of a typical northern-circuit safari's fee spend that goes to each. Add your own direct project support beneath — named organisations only.

SerengetiTANAPA

The largest share of a northern-circuit fee spend. Funds anti-poaching patrols, road and airstrip maintenance, and ranger posts across 14,750 km².

34%
NgorongoroNCAA

The conservation levy plus the crater descent fee. Unusually, the NCAA also funds services for the Maasai communities who live within the conservation area.

28%
TarangireTANAPA

Funds the elephant research and anti-poaching work the park is known for, and the maintenance of the Tarangire River circuit.

14%
Lake ManyaraTANAPA

A small park doing disproportionate work on the groundwater forest and the Rift escarpment corridor.

8%
Ruaha & NyerereTANAPA

The southern parks, far larger and far less visited, where fee income per square kilometre is a fraction of the north's and matters more.

10%
Community landVillage councils

Concession and campsite fees paid directly to village councils bordering the parks, where the land is community-owned rather than gazetted.

6%

Shares are indicative for a typical eight-day northern-circuit safari and will shift with your route. Fee tariffs are published by TANAPA and the NCAA and revised annually.

Ask any operator to show you this.

The breakdown above is public information — any operator can produce it. The ones who will not are usually the ones whose “all-inclusive” price is doing something else.
