Two and a half million years ago a volcano the size of Kilimanjaro collapsed in on itself, leaving a bowl 600 metres deep and 260 square kilometres across. What formed inside it is the closest thing on earth to a self-contained wilderness — roughly 25,000 large animals that never need to leave, walled in by grassland, forest, swamp and a soda lake that turns pink with flamingo.
Descend at dawn and you are inside a landscape that feels genuinely prehistoric.

Clear skies, short grass and easy visibility on the crater floor. The busiest months by some margin, so early descents and a rim lodge matter more than usual.
Short grass rich with new growth, calving on the surrounding plains and dramatic light. Fewer vehicles on the floor and the finest photography of the year.
The long rains bring thunderous skies and an almost empty crater. The descent road can be demanding, but rates drop sharply and you will share the floor with very few others.
Iconic Ngorongoro Wildlife
Nowhere else in Africa concentrates so much large game into so small a space. The crater floor holds one of the densest lion populations on the continent, big-tusked elephant bulls in the Lerai forest, buffalo herds in their thousands, and one of Tanzania's last viable populations of critically endangered black rhino. Lake Magadi at the centre draws flamingo in their tens of thousands.

Every bed here is on the rim or the surrounding highlands — no accommodation is permitted on the crater floor itself.
● Crater Rim
Camping directly on the rim at 2,400 metres, with the whole caldera below you at sunrise. Cold at night, unforgettable at dawn, and by far the cheapest way to wake up here.

A dawn descent down the Seneto road onto the floor, with roughly six hours among lion prides, elephant bulls, buffalo herds and — with luck — black rhino. The single best game-viewing day in Tanzania.

The things our guests ask most before they travel. Still unsure? Speak to a safari specialist — we reply within 24 hours.
It is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a 260 square kilometre bowl, 600 metres deep, holding roughly 25,000 large animals that mostly never leave. That concentration means you can realistically see lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and black rhino within a single day, which is possible almost nowhere else in Africa.
Ngorongoro offers the best chance in Tanzania. Lion, elephant and buffalo are near-certain. Black rhino are present in small numbers and seen on perhaps half of all descents, usually at distance on the Lerai side. Leopard are the hardest, as they favour the forested crater rim rather than the floor.
Crater fees are substantial and charged on top of park entry — currently around USD 250 per vehicle for the descent plus conservation area fees per person per day. As part of our itineraries expect from USD 380 per person per day at classic lodges, rising to USD 2,400 at the crater-rim luxury lodges.
A descent is typically a half day, from around 6:30am to early afternoon, as vehicles must exit within a six-hour window. Most guests spend one full day. Because game viewing is so concentrated, a single descent usually satisfies — many itineraries pair it with a night on the rim and a morning departure.
The crater is excellent year-round because its wildlife is resident rather than migratory. June to October is dry and clear but busiest. January to March brings green grass, newborn animals and fewer vehicles. April and May are wet and quiet with dramatic light, though the descent road can be difficult.
Yes — the crater rim sits at around 2,300 metres and is genuinely cold, particularly at dawn and after dark. Temperatures on the rim regularly drop to 5-10C at night. Pack a fleece and a warm jacket even if the rest of your safari is hot. The crater floor is considerably warmer.
No. There is no accommodation on the crater floor itself — all lodges and camps are on the rim or on the surrounding conservation area slopes. This protects the ecosystem and is strictly enforced. The rim lodges have the finest views in Tanzania in compensation.
Very much so. The drives are short, the game is dense and easily seen, and the descent itself is dramatic. It is one of the most rewarding safari days for families. Do pack warm clothing for the rim, which surprises most visitors.
Ngorongoro sits between Lake Manyara and the Serengeti, so almost every northern circuit itinerary includes it. A classic route runs Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti over 6-8 days, often finishing in Zanzibar. Olduvai Gorge is a worthwhile stop on the way to the Serengeti.
